HEPA Air Filters Do More Than Clean Your Air — A New Study Says They May Sharpen Your Mind, Too

I've run air purifiers in my house for years because of dust, pet hair, wildfire smoke season, and living close enough to a road to hear traffic at night. Not to mention the pollutants I create during home improvement projects, 3D printing, and using my desktop laser. They worked, in the ways I expected: less dust on the shelves, air that smelled better. Fine.

Then in April 2026, a study landed in Scientific Reports, a peer-reviewed Nature journal, that made me look at those machines differently.[1] Researchers had people run real HEPA purifiers at home for a month, and adults over 40 finished a standard thinking test about 12% faster than they did after a month with look-alike units that didn't actually filter anything.[1] Same people, same houses, same test. The only difference was whether the purifier was really purifying.

Below is the study in plain English, then the exact three-device setup I run, if you want to copy it.

What the researchers actually did

The study is called HAFTRAP, short for Home Air Filtration for Traffic-Related Air Pollution. Researchers at UConn Health and Tufts ran it, and everyone in it lived within about 200 meters (two blocks) of highways near Somerville, Massachusetts.[1] If you've lived near a busy road, you know what that means: a steady background of traffic exhaust, even with the windows shut.

Every participant got two one-month periods:

  1. A month with real HEPA purifiers running in the bedroom and living room
  2. A month with sham units that looked and sounded identical but had the filter guts removed

Between the two was a washout month with nothing running. Half the people started with the real purifiers, half with the dummies. Since every person went through both setups, each participant acted as their own control, which cancels out everything else going on in their lives.[1] That's a much stronger design than comparing different people.

The machines genuinely cleaned the air, too. In the homes where researchers measured, the real purifiers cut indoor fine particle pollution by 52% and ultrafine particles by 32% compared to the dummies.[1]

The test: connect the dots

At the start and end of each month, participants took the Trail Making Test. You've probably done a version of it without knowing it had a name: connect the dots on paper.

Part A asks you to connect 1, 2, 3... in order. It measures raw speed and focus. Part B asks you to alternate: 1, then A, then 2, then B, and so on. That one is harder. It measures mental flexibility, what psychologists call executive function, meaning the brain's ability to switch gears and plan.

Part B is also the ability that reliably fades with age, and it's tied to the frontal lobes, areas that other research links to traffic pollution exposure.[1]

What they found

For the whole group (everyone was 30 or older), the results were a shrug. No real difference.

Then the researchers split people by age, and something popped out. Participants 40 and older finished the harder Part B test 12% faster after their month of real HEPA filtration: 54.0 seconds on average, versus 61.4 seconds with the sham units. The difference held up statistically (p = 0.02, for those who like their numbers with receipts).[1]

Under 40? No measurable change. That tracks with the broader research, which finds the cognitive effects of air pollution become more pronounced starting around age 40.[1]

The honest caveats

Some honest caveats, because you deserve the whole picture:

  • It ran for one month, so this is a short-term effect, not proof that purifiers prevent dementia.
  • It was a secondary analysis of a trial that was primarily looking at blood pressure. The age split came partway through, so follow-up studies need to confirm it.[1]
  • Everyone in it was healthy and living near highways. We don't know yet how this plays out for people with existing cognitive impairment, or how much benefit you'd get in a house far from traffic.[1]
  • The improvement in older adults was modest: 7.4 seconds on a timed test. Meaningful? The researchers think so, given the design. Life-changing? No.

Still, it's worth noticing what happened: people over 40 thought measurably faster after four weeks of cleaner air, in a trial where they served as their own controls. That's a decent return for a box with a fan in it.

Why your house needs this whether or not you live near a highway

Traffic isn't the only indoor particle source. Cooking generates bursts of fine particles, especially searing, frying, and anything on a gas flame. Candles, wood fires, dust, pet dander, and wildfire smoke all add to the load, and outdoor particles migrate inside no matter where you live.[1]

A HEPA filter is a dense mat of fibers that traps particles as air passes through. A certified one captures at least 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns, the size range that matters most for what gets deep into your lungs. Smaller particles, including the ultrafine ones from vehicle exhaust, generally get caught even more efficiently.[1]

A HEPA filter does not remove gases on its own. Traffic exhaust and cooking also produce gases like nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and carbon filters are what handle those. Keep that in mind for the gear below.

This is the one doing daily duty, and the one I'd recommend first to almost anyone. I have one on every floor of my home. As with the Dyson, most of the value isn't in the filter; it is in the air quality monitor accessible through the App.

  • It's AHAM VERIFIDE, which means the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers actually tested how much clean air it delivers. That's why the room rating of up to 1,875 sq. ft. (at one air change per hour) means something.[5]
  • The U-shaped inlet is the smart bit. Most purifiers pull air from one side, and pet hair eventually chokes the intake. This one pulls from the front and the bottom, so fur doesn't clog the main filter as fast. The pre-filter that catches all that hair is washable: rinse it in the sink, dry it, done. No consumable cost for the grossest part of the job.[5]
  • Filtration runs three stages: washable pre-filter, then a main filter that catches particles down to 0.3 microns, then activated carbon for odors and fumes.[5]
  • Sleep mode is rated at 27 dB, quieter than a whisper, with the display lights off. That matters more than it sounds. The study ran purifiers in bedrooms and living rooms around the clock, and a loud unit gets turned off; a turned-off purifier filters nothing.[1][5]
  • Auto mode watches the built-in particle sensor and adjusts the fan on its own. I mostly leave it on Auto and forget it exists, which is the highest compliment I can give an appliance.[5]

Best for living rooms, open floor plans, and pet households, or anyone who wants certified performance without the premium price. Levoit also sells a Pet Allergy version of the cartridge if dander is your main enemy.[5]

2. Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP2 De-NOx — the premium play for traffic-side homes

Yes, it costs several times what the Levoit does. It's also a different kind of machine, and its special talent lines up with the highway study that kicked off this post. Other models accomplish similar goals. 

  • Dyson seals the whole air path, every seam and gasket, so air can't sneak past the HEPA H13 filter unfiltered. It captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns.[2]
  • The "De-NOx" part is real. The K-Carbon filter is impregnated with potassium carbonate to capture nitrogen dioxide, the gas that comes off vehicle exhaust, gas stoves, and combustion. Dyson's testing shows it captures 50% more NO₂ than the standard formulation.[2] Remember that the HAFTRAP homes sat within two blocks of highways. NO₂ was exactly the pollutant in their air.[1][2]
  • A catalytic filter continuously destroys formaldehyde and never needs replacing. Nice if you've got new furniture, fresh paint, or anything else off-gassing in the house.[2]
  • It heats in winter and cools in summer, with 350° oscillation to push air across the room. It's the only air device I own that earns its footprint in every season.[2]
  • The sensors are the part I didn't expect to like. It monitors particles and gases, reports live on the LCD and in the MyDyson app, and reacts on its own. Watching the readings spike when someone cooks, then come back down as the machine works, is what convinced me it isn't just moving air.[2]

Best for bedrooms you want purified and tempered, homes near busy roads, or anyone who'd rather own one device that does purifier, heater, and fan duty all year. It is portable enough to move around the house with you and an absolute must if you work from home.




3. Aranet4 — the "trust but verify" piece

A purifier that cleans air you never needed to clean wastes electricity, and a room whose stuffiness comes from ventilation won't be fixed by any filter. The Aranet4 is how I tell the difference. It filters nothing. It measures.

  • CO₂ gets measured the accurate way, with an NDIR infrared sensor rated at ±(30 ppm + 3% of reading). That's the sensing method treated as the gold standard in consumer monitors. Cheap monitors report "estimated CO₂" guessed from other readings; this one measures the actual gas.[3][4]
  • Rising indoor CO₂ means exhaled breath is building up, which is your cue that a space needs fresh air rather than filtration. Research on CO₂ and cognition ties it to drowsiness and slower thinking in stuffy rooms, which pairs neatly with the purifier study above.[4]
  • The e-ink screen sips power: two AA batteries run it for about four years, and the display stays readable in direct sunlight. It also tracks temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure.[3][4]
  • It's a 70 × 70 mm puck with colored bars that read green, yellow, or red at a glance. I move it between the bedroom, the office, and wherever people gather. Best for anyone who wants proof their air setup is working, and early warning when the real fix is opening a window.

What I'd tell a friend, in three lines

  1. Put purifiers in the rooms where you spend your hours. The study ran them continuously in the bedroom and living room. A purifier in the guest room does nothing for your brain.[1]
  2. Particles are HEPA's job. Gases need carbon. If traffic or cooking is your worry, that's what you're shopping for: it's why my main unit has an activated carbon stage, and why the Dyson goes further with its NO₂-targeted K-Carbon filter.[1][2]
  3. Verify, don't vibe. A $190 monitor told me more about my home's air in one week than years of guessing had.[3]



FAQ

Do HEPA air purifiers actually improve brain function? In one 2026 randomized crossover trial, adults 40 and older performed a mental-flexibility test about 12% faster after a month of sleeping and living with real HEPA filtration versus look-alike non-filtering units. It's one short-term study in healthy adults, so treat it as promising rather than proven.[1]

How long does it take to notice a benefit from an air purifier? The study above measured a difference after 30 days of continuous use in bedrooms and living rooms. Air quality itself improves within hours of running a properly sized unit; the cognitive measurement took a month.[1]

Do air purifiers reduce CO₂? No. HEPA filters catch particles, and carbon filters adsorb some gases, but neither removes CO₂. Stuffy-room CO₂ is a ventilation issue: open a window or run an ERV/HRV. That's exactly why a CO₂ monitor like the Aranet4 is worth owning alongside a purifier.[3]
